VALORENA PUBLISHING
Our Ethos
Valorena Publishing is a mission-driven, independent publishing house rooted in the belief that family literacy is a powerful source of knowledge—and the home is a vital site of learning.
Long before formal instruction begins, children develop literacy through shared stories, language, routines, observation, and care. We center families as essential knowledge-holders and recognize homes as dynamic learning environments where meaning-making, identity formation, and emotional understanding first take shape.
Valorena Publishing specializes in developing core thematic texts that originate in professional practice and lived experience. We collaborate with educators, scholars, and practitioners to transform classroom insights and long-standing passion projects into thoughtfully crafted picture books and literacy-forward resources that function seamlessly across home, school, and community contexts.
Our publishing approach integrates creative storytelling with evidence-based literacy practices, ensuring that each title is emotionally resonant, culturally responsive, and pedagogically sound. These books are designed to serve as conversation starters at home, instructional anchors in educational settings, and reflective mirrors for young readers as they develop their voices and sense of self.
Our catalog is intentionally curated and purpose-driven. Each title contributes to a larger thematic ecosystem that supports social-emotional learning, cultural awareness, mental health literacy, and foundational life skills. The goal is clear: to ensure all children see their lives, families, and communities reflected in the stories they read—cultivating confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong relationship with literacy.
About the Publisher
Valorena Publishing was founded in 2013 by Dr. Valerie Williams-Sanchez, a literacy scholar with a Ph.D. in Literacy and the creator of The Cocoa Kids Collection®, a self-published children’s picture-book series grounded in inclusive storytelling and social-emotional learning.
Dr. Williams-Sanchez has presented internationally on the philosophy, pedagogy, and science behind her work at venues including the World Literacy Summit (Oxford University), the Global Health Literacy Summit (International Health Literacy Association), the IBBY World Congress, and the European Conference on Literacy.
Her research bridges literacy, health communication, and multicultural education, with a particular focus on picture books as tools for empathy development and mental health literacy in children. Building on this work, she developed Literacy for Health™, a platform that supports individuals—especially youth and communities of color—in developing the skills to create, understand, and use information that promotes overall well-being through the full expression of literacy, the creative arts, and evidence-based practices.
Her scholarly work appears in peer-reviewed journals including Early Childhood Education Journal and the Journal of Cultural Marketing Strategy, with forthcoming editorial contributions to Health Literacy and Communication Open. Across publishing, research, and practice, her work reflects a sustained commitment to applied literacy strategies that empower diverse populations.
Dr. Williams-Sanchez is a passionate advocate for diverse narratives, ethical self-publishing, and literacy as a form of empowerment—ensuring that stories are not only beautifully told, but meaningfully lived.
